Our dining room floor was truly a labour of love. It was a bit of an odd project. Technically part of the same space as the kitchen, yet completely different in character. The kitchen had a beautifully polished, hundred-year-old wooden floor, while the dining area featured raw, untreated, and stained boards that were loose and uneven. Matching the two was impossible, so I took a different approach: filling the gaps with a mix of filler, a credit card, and black elastic cord. It was a painstaking process that required strong knees and a lot of patience.
Of course, within a year, our toddler had pulled most of it up.
The white floor wash proved hardier and created a rustic, lived-in look. It adds character, works well with the furniture, and—perhaps most importantly—it hides the chaos that comes with kids making a mess!
